WHO IS GDAWGG? (AKA MOOSED)

The first thing I'd like to do is acknowledge some of the best gamers in the world, my -{gdwg}- Clan-mates: WRATH, Spam I Am, Swiz, MaiM, ratbag_mf, Greekfreak, Metalimage, Idle_Threat, Stinky, Crysis, Joseidon, Loblo, THOR, F.N.G., Tank_Jr, FreeRadical, Corn, Walkin In Da Slime, Giglisaw, JD, System36, AGGRESSOR, functionVoid, American Badass, smokin, stellor, Ibanez Rocker! and Jomamma.

Like many of you, I bought Half-Life in 1998 and got hooked right away in the quest to launch the rocket (I succeeded). In multiplayer mode, I really got into Datacore mostly but played the other original multiplayer maps as well. It didn't take long for the SDK guys to start mapping and skinning like crazy and the rest, as they say, is history.

Early on, I found some servers I liked and played them every chance I got. My early playername was "putrid". Some of you may remember me. Then one day I stumbled upon Killbox and was blown away by it's simplicity. I was completely floored by how it was just ONE HUGE BOX! I couldn't get enough. In January 2000, after procurring the proper bandwidth, I launched my first Half-Life Dedicated Server. The map, of course, was Killbox. The server name, of course, was GDawgg.

That Half-Life killbox server ran from January 2000 until March 2009 -- nine years.

November 16, 2004: Half-Life 2 is released.

Today GDawgg Clan has one HL2DM server running.

For more details on my gaming history and the history of GDawgg Clan read my gamer's blog.

Along with HL2DM came a multitude of maps. In January of 2005, I found a map-maker by the name of BlackHat Rob to make a killbox for GDawgg Clan: dm_killbox_gdwg. Rob did a superb job and his map ran on our GDawgg Clan servers for 6 months. dm_killbox_gdwg is no longer in use by GDawgg Clan at this time.

In June of 2005, I met a "master" map-maker, Bullet Magnet from Scotland. He churned out eleven maps for GDawgg Clan and he taught me how to use Hammer World Editor to make my own HL2DM maps.

On August 30, 2005, I made my first map -- dm_doors_5. Since then, I've created a total of 220 maps for thirteen different games (93 HL2DM maps, 26 Half-Life maps, one F.E.A.R. DM map, 10 Crysis Wars maps, 22 CoD4 maps, two HL2DMPRO maps, 40 UT3 maps, eight Crysis 2 maps, two Soldier of Fortune II maps, 11 Quake III Arena maps, one Quake 2 map, three Quake 4 maps, one Far Cry 3 map):

On March 20, 2008 I installed Call of Duty 4 and went straight away to the multiplayer. I had heard much hype about this game and wasn't a believer until I started playing the game. I was totally impressed by what the folks at Activision created. I started running a CoD4 dedicated server a day later. Suffice to say I'm a believer now. I play CoD4 between 15 to 30 hours a week. yep, I'm addicted. It's nice to have a game to play that i like this much.

GDawgg Clan has three CoD4 deathmatch servers running today (7.17.13).

I made the first two of my sixteen CoD4 maps on December 3rd and 8th of 2008: mp_killbox_d and mp_madness5. The CoD4 map I put the most into is mp_killbox5. This map has six jump pads in it and a handful of teleporters that I made from scratch. The folks at Infinity Ward didn't intend to have jump pads and teleporters in custom maps for their game, I guarantee you that. However, the nuts and bolts were there in the map editor to make it happen so I created them and put them in the level. Pretty cool map, if I must say so myself. Probably the most popular of all the CoD4 maps I made is mp_chaos. The Dawggs and I had a bunch of fun playing this one and it's been downloaded hundreds of times from my download site. It must be noted that after CoD4, Activision, Infinity Ward and Treyarch stopped creating map editors for all their subsequent games in the CoD series. They ceased to encourage and provide avenues for PC gamers to make and use custom content (maps, mods) for their games. Certainly this is not the direction I wanted to see them go in, however, it's a sign of the times. Certain game developers and publishers these days are way more concerned with making billions of dollars off sales to console gamers than they are with providing creative outlets for PC gamers. Sad, but true.

On September 29, 2008, GDawgg Clan added two Crysis Wars servers. Great game!
On November 17th and 18th 2008, I made my first Crysis Wars maps: deathby_heli and killbox. In total I made ten maps for Crysis Wars. Had some fun playing the game too. Was a blast, awesome imagery. Crytek has made great strides with its graphics, to be sure. GDawgg Clan is no longer running Crysis Wars servers as of May 2009.

One of my trusted clan-mates, -{gdwg}-Swiz, turned me onto Unreal Tournament 3 on June 12, 2009. I'm no stranger to UT. I played some the earlier games in the series but UT3 is totally cool. Some aspects of this game remind me of Half-Life (game-speed, players always run, no sprint/fatigue nonsense). As of 08.17.09, UT3 is by far my favorite game. Though I really like CoD4, UT3 is more what I'm looking for in an FPS. Mapping for UT3 is also a blast (I've made 40 UT3 maps to date). I'm having a lot of fun with this game. GDawgg Clan has no UT3 servers running at this this time (10.03.12).

November 10, 2009 brought us CoD MW2. The game itself is awesome. Easily the best FPS ever made (at that time). Infinty Ward, MW2's developer, has created a huge controversy by disabling the game's developer's console, dedicated servers and compile tools. The compile tools are necessary in order to create custom content (maps, mods) for the game. IW created a console-gaming type "match-making" system called IWNet in place of dedicated servers. IWNet is the biggest piece of crap to come down the pipe in a long while. A complete piece of crap. The PC gaming world was repulsed and angered by what IW did but many of us acquired the game after console enablers showed up. These console enablers and other "modifications" were created by modders/programmers in the pc gaming community as a show of resolve and defiance against IW's pathetic IWNet. With the console enabled, players are able to set up their own servers. Fortunately, CoD MW-2 is kickass but many of us are looking forward to the day when dedicated servers become the norm for this game and IWNet goes in the trash where it belongs.

On June 20th 2010 a friend, Nelsonator, told me about an IWNet emulator called alterIWNet (aIW). aIW is awesome. It has given us back the console that IW and IWNet took away. Now we can play MW2 in modded servers without any contact with Steam or VAC or IWNet. To all the folks responsible for creating aIW and to those responsible for keeping aIW running well everyday, i say a tremendous "THANK YOU!!!" for making MW2 worth playing.

alterIWNet made good on their promise to bring MW2 dedicated servers to us pc gamers on October 16, 2010 and we're totally grateful. aIW also has created and in-game MW2 dedicated server menu and a web-based MW2 dedicated server list. Thanks for completing the job aIW! Additionally, I've created nine MW2 mods which can be used with MW2 dedicated servers. aIW has since ceased operation. A new team has emerged which has picked up where aIW left off. Their name is Four Delta One. 4D1 is doing a great job of making MW2 and MW3 playable.

On November 9, 2010 along came Call of Duty Black Ops. Kickass game. Better than MW2. I reached 15th Prestige -- level 50 on 1.20.11. Highly addictive. State of the art game. Good job by BO's developer, Treyarch, for not making the same blunders Infinity Ward made with MW2. This game has dedicated servers and the developer's console.

Crytek released Crysis 2 on February 22, 2011. Great game. I really enjoy playing it. Crysis 2 has a steep learning curve that keeps it from being overly popular. Crytek released Cry Engine 3 Sandbox (map editor for Crysis 2) on June 29, 2011. I created my second C2 map on 7.22.11: cw2_killbox_v2. To date, I've made eight Crysis 2 custom maps. I'm most proud of cw2_doors_v2, cw2_shipment5, cw2_traffic2 and cw2_pushwall.

A funny thing happened when the folks at Activision and Infinity Ward set their sights on making MW3. Apparently, they didn't want to repeat the blunders they made with MW2 so they enlisted the help of Glen Schofield and his game developemnt company, Sledgehammer Games. The difference is very positively noticable. MW3 is a great game. It's what MW2 should've been. MW3 released on November 8, 2011 and so far the only folks complaining are those who like to complain. There was this tiny little issue of dedicated servers being unranked but thanks to the creativity and ingenuity of the PC gaming community that didn't remain an issue for long. At the moment (12.6.11), I and my clan-mates are enjoying this game, especially it's "ranked" dedicated servers. We have two very popular MW3 servers running at this time (7.17.17).
